It is the cry of a Vassa Elder and he is Š calling the faithful of Barrakeesh to early morning Š prayer. You gather together your equipment and Š Fernant's servant brings you a bowl and a pitcher of Š water so that you may refresh yourself before sharing Š breakfast with Oriah and the Lord-lieutenant. After breakfast, Fernant oversees the loading of bags Š and other personal items aboard his mule-drawn Š carriage. Then an hour before noon the three of you Š leave for the quay and go aboard the ιPride of Š Sommerlundι. At first Captain Raker is unhappy about Š transporting Oriah, arguing that the presence of a Š beautiful young woman aboard his ship will distract Š his crew from their duties. However his objections Š quickly evaporate when Fernant offers to pay him Š twenty Gold Crowns for her passage to Bisutan. The ship leaves Barrakeesh on the noon tide and makes Š swift progress ahead of a favourable southerly wind. Š But by dusk the wind has dropped, and Raker decides Š to spend the first night at anchor in a protected Š cove a few miles to the east of Chula. The night Š passes peacefully and you wake at dawn to a Š spectacular sight. Turn to β35β
