+ You rise at dawn and after a hearty breakfast in the \r\8a tavern kitchen, you and Karvas collect your horses \r\8a from the stables. The tavern-keeper and his wife bid \r\8a you a cheery farewell, and set off from Voshno along \r\8a a road that crosses the plain to the east. \r

+ The morning sky is clear and sunny, and the air is \r\8a filled with butterflies and the sound of birdsong. \r\8a Having now entered Siyen, and with ten days remaining \r\8a to Harvestmas, you are feeling quietly confident that \r\8a you will reach Seroa in time for Karvas to be crowned \r\8a King. To your surprise you find that the prince is a \r\8a little less optimistic. He tells you that you are now \r\8a approaching the eastern province of Cavalia, a region \r\8a which shares its name with its principal city. The \r\8a province and city are ruled by Sadanzo, the evil \r\8a baron who seeks to usurp the throne of Siyen. Karvas \r\8a cautions you to remain vigilant until you are safely \r\8a beyond the borders of his enemy's province.\r

+ It is nearing noon when you first glimpse the towers \r\8a and spires of Cavalia glinting on the horizon. The \r\8a plains road leads directly to its fortified \r\8a gatehouse, but Karvas is anxious to avoid entering \r\8a the city. He proposes that you leave the road and use \r\8a a smaller trail which threads through several \r\8a villages and settlements that ring the city. You are \r\8a approaching the first of these villages where you see \r\8a a troop of thirty horsemen riding towards you on the \r\8a trail ahead. They wear chainmail armour and they each \r\8a have the emblem of a black eagle's head emblazoned \r\8a upon their white surcoats and shields. A golden crown \r\8a surmounts these eagle's heads and Karvas gasps when \r\8a he sees them. He signals to you to rein in your \r\8a horse, and as you come to a halt, he tells you that \r\8a the approaching horsemen are wearing the livery of \r\8a Baron Sadanzo. The black eagle's head is his mark, \r\8a but it is the addition of a golden crown that has \r\8a shocked Karvas. It is the sign of royal ascedence. \r\8a Karvas is fearful that Baron Sadanzo has already been \r\8a crowned King of Siyen. \r

+ As they ride nearer, the leader of the troop - a \r\8a Knight Bachelor - motions his horsemen to leave the \r\8a trail and encircle you and the prince. As they obey \r\8a his command, the Knight Bachelor brings his snorting \r\8a steed to a halt alongside your horse.\r

+ "Hail, fellow riders" he says, with forced \r\8a politeness. He raises the steel visor of his helmet \r\8a and his dark, suspicious eyes scrutinise you from \r\8a head to toe.\r
