  11         You are woken early the following morning by the \r\8a     motion of the carriage. As you rub your eyes and \r\8a     stretch your aching limbs, your fellow passengers \r\8a    tell you that the caravan has been on the move for \r\8a   more than an hour. They are eating a breakfast of \r\8a    bread and fruit which they generously offer to share \r\8a with you.\r

  13         It is almost noon when the stone town of Bavari looms \r\8a        into view. Most of its sun-bleached shops and houses \r\8a are contained within a wall of uncemented stone \r\8a      blocks which rise to twice the height of a horse. The \r\8a        road approaches a heavy wooden gate, banded and \r\8a      studded with iron, which is flanked by circular guard \r\8a        towers. Perforating the walls are slits for archers \r\8a  and openings for larger machines of war.\r

  15         The procession of wagons passes through the gate and \r\8a comes to a halt in the middle of Bavari. As you \r\8a      disembark you sense an air of excitement pervading \r\8a   this town. You overhear the other passengers talking \r\8a and you learn that today is the third day of the \r\8a     Bavarian gladiatorial circus - an annual event which \r\8a attracts the finest warriors of Vassagonia to come \r\8a   here and compete with each other in armed combat. \r\8a    Great wealth and status are the rewards for those who \r\8a        triumph; disgrace and sometimes death awaits those \r\8a   who fail.\r

  17         You are curious to see this great event and so you \r\8a   follow a group of passengers to Bavari's arena where \r\8a the gladiatorial circus is being staged. Entrance to \r\8a the arena is free and you take a seat on one of the \r\8a  many stone tiers that encircle its oval-shaped \r\8a       fighting area. Throughout the afternoon several \r\8a      combats are staged between warriors on foot and on \r\8a   horseback. The heat of the desert sun is unrelenting, \r\8a        and by late afternoon you are feeling parched. During \r\8a        a lull in the contests, you hear the tinkling sound \r\8a  of running water and you decide to seek out its \r\8a      source. You descend to the edge of the fighting area \r\8a and enter a tunnel which passes beneath the tiers of \r\8a seats. Halfway along this cool tunnel is an open door \r\8a        set into the whitewashed wall. Through the doorway \r\8a   you see a bronze fountain standing in the middle of \r\8a  an empty room. It is richly embellished with \r\8a engravings which depict ancient gladiatorial \r\8a contests, and a stream of sparkling waters issues \r\8a    upwards from a nozzle at its centre, inviting you to \r\8a drink.\r

  19         You are desperate to slake your thirst and so you \r\8a    enter the room and stoop over the fountain.  You are \r\8a swallowing the deliciously cool water when suddenly \r\8a  you sense someone rushing at you from behind.\r
