  11         Beyond the east gate of Battle Pass, the trail winds \r\8a down through craggy borderland towards the lush river \r\8a        valley of the River Ioma, where an ocean of sun-\r\8a      yellowed grasses sway languidly in the warm afternoon \r\8a        breeze. This rolling vista has a graceful \r\8a    tranquillity that reminds you of the Southlund \r\8a       Marches of Southern Magnamund. It stirs fond memories \r\8a        of childhood days in that distant province and \r\8a       prompts an unexpected bout of homesickness that \r\8a      dampens your spirits. Karvas, too, is feeling a \r\8a      little melancholy. Yet his mood is not born out of a \r\8a longing for his homeland, but from a sense of loss. \r\8a  You ask what ails him and, with some reluctance, he \r\8a  tells you:\r
  12         "The beauty of this valley belies its bloody past," \r\8a  he says, and he sweeps his arm across the distant \r\8a    horizon. "Many of my ancestors and countrymen have \r\8a   fought and died here in battle. For the Siyenese it \r\8a  is a land filled with proud and bitter memories."\r
  13         He points to a distant spire of rock and, when you \r\8a   magnify your vision, you see that its grey granite \r\8a   surface is too smooth and symmetrical for it to be a \r\8a natural feature of this rolling plain. \r
  14         "There stands the Oridon Stone," he says. "It marks \r\8a  the graves of ten thousand men who fell at the battle \r\8a        of Inkil Reach".\r
