11 The city of Oberra is still mourning the death of
\r\8a King Oridon. Its scarlet and yellow flags hang at
\r\8a half mast, and many of its citizens wear black arm
\r\8a bands and shawls as visible marks of their respect
\r\8a for the memory of Prince Karvas's father. As you ride
\r\8a along its paved streets, you see that many of its
\r\8a shops and public buildings bear proclamations
\r\8a announcing the forthcoming crowning of Baron Sadanzo
\r\8a on Harvestmas Day. Most of these notices have either
\r\8a been torn or defaced with black paint, and this
\r\8a cheers Karvas, for it shows that the citizens of this
\r\8a wealthy city do not welcome the prospect of having
\r\8a Baron Sadanzo as their future king.
\r
13 It is nearing darkness when you find the residence of
\r\8a Florin Sainus. It is well-appointed townhouse, built
\r\8a on three levels with its own walled garden and
\r\8a stables. You dismount and pull a bell rope that hangs
\r\8a beside its arched door. The prince's aged tutor is
\r\8a overwhelmed with surprise and delight when he opens
\r\8a the door and sees his former pupil standing on the
\r\8a steps before him. The old man ushers you both inside
\r\8a and orders his servants to attend to your horses.
\r\8a Over a reviving meal of steamed fish and oatmeal
\r\8a bread, Karvas recounts the perilous events of the
\r\8a past few weeks which have brought you here to seek
\r\8a his help. Gladly he pledges his assistance, but he
\r\8a cautions you that your time has nearly run out.
\r\8a Carefully he considers the ways by which you could
\r\8a still reach Seroa in time for the crowning, and at
\r\8a length he tells you of two routes. Both offer an
\r\8a equal chance of success.
\r
15 The first is the most direct route: the King's
\r\8a Highway from Oberra to Seroa. Normally this road
\r\8a would take four days to travel, but there are now
\r\8a only three full days left before Harvestmas, and so
\r\8a you would have to ride hard to make up for the
\r\8a missing day. The second route is partly by road and
\r\8a partly by river. Seventy-five miles due east of
\r\8a Oberra is the hamlet of Xaia. It lies on a bend of
\r\8a the River Seroa and is a boarding point for the
\r\8a boats that carry cargo and travellers along this
\r\8a major waterway. By this route the journey to Seroa
\r\8a can be completed in three days, "assuming that the
\r\8a river boats are running to schedule," warns Sainus.

16 "They are the swiftest means of reaching the capital,
\r\8a yet they can be unreliable during spells of bad
\r\8a weather."
\r
18 Karvas proposes that you decide which route to take
\r\8a and then leave Oberra at once. "If we commence our
\r\8a journey this night, we may gain a few precious hours
\r\8a that could ensure our success." You agree with the
\r\8a prince that you should go at once, but Sainus informs
\r\8a you that it will not be possible for you to leave
\r\8a Oberra until dawn. He tells you that the city council
\r\8a have imposed a curfew during the hours of darkness,
\r\8a following an outbreak of thefts and murders among its
\r\8a prominent citizens. Sainus believes that Baron
\r\8a Sadanzo's robber knights are responsible for the
\r\8a crimes, for many have become residents of the city
\r\8a since King Oridon passed away. He fears that they are
\r\8a plotting to overthrow the council and will act as
\r\8a soon as Sadanzo is crowned king.
\r
20 In light of the situation, you decide to stay here
\r\8a and rest, and then leave the city at first light.
\r\8a Before you retire, Karvas asks you to decide which
\r\8a route you should use to travel to Seroa.
